Muntinesti nuts. If you haven't tried them yet, you don't know what you've missed. They are so flavorful and packed with walnuts. Once you've tasted them, I assure you that you will ask for a second portion. I like to make them from scratch. Let me show you my version.

  1. Mix 200 grams of flour, 100 ml of water, and salt. Knead until the dough is no longer sticky. Let it rest for 15 minutes.
  2. Fry 200 grams of walnuts in the oven at 200 degrees Celsius for 5 minutes.
  3. Sprinkle flour over the dough and roll it out thinly. Place it on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Bake in a preheated oven at 200 degrees Celsius for 5 minutes.
  4. Once baked, transfer the dough to a bowl, sprinkle with a little more flour, and let it cool.
  5. For the syrup, caramelize 160 grams of sugar until it gets a light color. Add 2 liters of water to the caramelized sugar.
  6. Grate one-third of the fried walnuts and chop the rest with a knife.
  7. Rub the lemon peel with 2 tablespoons of sugar to release the flavor.
  8. Layer half of the ground walnuts and the chopped walnuts over the dough. Sprinkle with a tablespoon of cinnamon.
  9. When the syrup begins to boil, add a teaspoon of salt, vanilla essence, and the prepared muffins. Boil for 15-20 minutes.
  10. Mix a tablespoon of flour with half a cup of water. Pour the mixture into the boiling syrup, add the remaining walnuts, and boil for an additional 10 minutes.
  11. Serve and enjoy your Moldavian or Montenegrin muffins.
