Upside-Down Orange Cake

Ingredients
    For the caramelized oranges:
  • 2 oranges, washed and sliced
  • cups sugar
  • cups water
  • 2 tablespoons orange juice
  • For the cake batter:
  • 200 grams sugar
  • Grated zest of 2 oranges
  • 3 medium eggs
  • 60 grams yogurt
  • 165 milliliters melted butter (or oil)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons orange juice
  • 165 grams flour
  • For the syrup:
  • Remaining soaking syrup
  • Juice of ½ blood orange
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
Instructions
  1. Prepare the Oranges:
    1. Wash the oranges in warm water with baking soda.
    2. Grate the orange peel and set it aside.
    3. Cut the oranges into thin slices.
    4. In a bowl, mix ⅓ cup sugar, ½ cup water, and 2 tbsp orange juice.
    5. Soak the orange slices in this syrup for a few minutes.
    6. Arrange the orange slices on the bottom of a 20 cm pan.
  2. Make the Cake Batter:
    1. Mix the 200 g sugar with the grated orange zest.
    2. In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, yogurt, melted butter (or oil), and vanilla.
    3. Add 2 tbsp orange juice and mix well.
    4. Gradually incorporate flour into the mixture.
  3. Bake the Cake:
    1. Pour the batter over the arranged orange slices in the pan.
    2. Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (356°F) until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  4. Prepare the Syrup:
    1. In a saucepan, combine the remaining syrup, juice of ½ blood orange, and 2 tbsp sugar.
    2. Simmer until slightly thickened.
  5. Final Touch:
    1. Once the cake is baked, let it cool for a few minutes.
    2. Flip it upside down onto a plate so the caramelized oranges are on top.
    3. Drizzle with the prepared orange syrup.
