Muntinesti nuts. If you haven't tried them yet, you don't know what you've missed. They are so flavorful and packed with walnuts. Once you've tasted them, I assure you that you will ask for a second portion. I like to make them from scratch. Let me show you my version.
- Mix 200 grams of flour, 100 ml of water, and salt. Knead until the dough is no longer sticky. Let it rest for 15 minutes.
- Fry 200 grams of walnuts in the oven at 200 degrees Celsius for 5 minutes.
- Sprinkle flour over the dough and roll it out thinly. Place it on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Bake in a preheated oven at 200 degrees Celsius for 5 minutes.
- Once baked, transfer the dough to a bowl, sprinkle with a little more flour, and let it cool.
- For the syrup, caramelize 160 grams of sugar until it gets a light color. Add 2 liters of water to the caramelized sugar.
- Grate one-third of the fried walnuts and chop the rest with a knife.
- Rub the lemon peel with 2 tablespoons of sugar to release the flavor.
- Layer half of the ground walnuts and the chopped walnuts over the dough. Sprinkle with a tablespoon of cinnamon.
- When the syrup begins to boil, add a teaspoon of salt, vanilla essence, and the prepared muffins. Boil for 15-20 minutes.
- Mix a tablespoon of flour with half a cup of water. Pour the mixture into the boiling syrup, add the remaining walnuts, and boil for an additional 10 minutes.
- Serve and enjoy your Moldavian or Montenegrin muffins.
