Fluffy Pretzel Dogs (Covridogi) – Soft Dough Wrapped Around Juicy Sausages

Ingredients
    For the dough:
  • 140 milliliters warm water
  • 5 grams dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 250 grams bread flour
  • A pinch of salt
  • 30 grams butter (softened)
  • A little oil (for greasing the bowl)
  • For assembling:
  • 8 small sausages or frankfurters (cremvuști)
  • A bit of extra flour (for rolling the dough)
  • For the topping:
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • Sesame seeds (optional)
Instructions
  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a large mixing bowl, add warm water, yeast, and sugar. Stir well and let it activate for 5 minutes.
    • Add flour, salt, and softened butter.
    • Mix until a dough forms, then transfer to a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes, until smooth and non-sticky.
    • Grease the bowl with a little oil, place the dough back in, cover with plastic wrap, and let it rise for 1 hour in a warm place.
  2. Prepare the Sausages:
    • While the dough rises, prepare your sausages (cremvuști). Pat them dry if needed and set aside.
  3. Assemble the Pretzel Dogs:
    • Once the dough has doubled in size, lightly flour your work surface and roll out the dough into a square.
    • Cut into strips (wide enough to wrap around the sausages).
    • Take each strip and wrap it spirally around a sausage.
  4. Final Rise:
    • Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
    • Place the wrapped sausages (covridogi) on the tray and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  5. Egg Wash & Topping:
    • In a small bowl, mix the egg yolk with the milk.
    • Brush each pretzel dog with this mixture.
    • Sprinkle sesame seeds on top if desired.
  6. Bake:
    • Preheat the oven to 200°C (390°F).
    • Bake the pretzel dogs for about 25 minutes or until golden brown.
    Best served warm, with mustard, ketchup, or your favorite dipping sauce.
